Why did you choose to attend CMU and join Phi Sigma Phi?
When I graduated high school, I wanted to be a high school teacher and a football coach. I decided to go to CMU because it has an excellent teaching program. My first weekend up at school, my roommates and I were invited to a party. We all went to the party at a house on Bellows Street across from Larzelere Hall. I remember meeting Chris (“Diggler”) Davis and talking to him about football and teaching. We were invited back, and I quickly became friends with many of people that I met at the party. We ended up hanging out at the house regularly, and I later learned they were re-starting the chapter of Phi Sigma Phi. I was offered a bid and rushed. That turned out to be one of the best decisions I ever made.
What is one of your favorite memories, classes, professors, or activities while
being part of Phi Sigma Phi?
There are so many memories from my time in the group. I really wish I would have kept a journal or something, because I know I’ve forgotten so many great times. One of my favorite things to do in the fraternity was go on road trips. We used to drive down to Dayton, Ohio and visit the Epsilon Beta Chapter a few times per year, fundraisers at Cedar Point in the spring and the fall, spring break trips down to Panama City, etc. I can remember great stories from every one of those trips.
How has your time in Phi Sigma Phi influenced or helped you in your life and
career?
I can definitely say that I learned more in college from being involved in Phi Sigma Phi than I did from the classes I took. I learned how to build relationships and networks, accomplish group goals, and some outstanding leadership skills. All the people I met and things I learned in Phi Sigma Phi lasted long after college. I still see several of my fraternity brothers often. Our families vacation together, our wives and kids are friends, and many of us still hang out on a regular basis. From a professional standpoint, the leadership and networking skills certainly helped me to establish my legal practice and build my law firm. I truly enjoy helping people, and at any given time, we are representing a fraternity brother or two. Sometimes they get charged with a crime and need some help, sometimes they’re starting a business and need some legal advice to get their business off the ground, sometimes they have family law issues that need to be resolved. I have also been fortunate that Phi Sigs also regularly refer their friends and family members to our firm. It is a good feeling to be able to help a brother. It is important to stay in touch. I try to stay in contact with a large number of people that I met in college. Sometimes, it’s just a random phone call or a funny text message to wish a fraternity brother a happy birthday. I believe that it is important to maintain the connections with the people you meet in your life. I think that is even more true when it comes to staying in contact with my fraternity brothers.
What are one or two of your proudest professional or personal accomplishments
that occurred after graduating from CMU?
Passing the Bar and becoming an attorney is up there. But I think I am prouder of the fact that I was able to create a successful law firm and hire a fraternity brother as the firm’s first senior associate attorney. It’s great to be able to work with a friend and fraternity brother every day and grow our careers together. What do you hope to see the alumni group do more of in the future? I would like to see more events and meet ups planned. I would like to see some networking events or meet ups planned for recent graduates, and some family-oriented events where the alumni can bring their wives and children. The golf outing this past
spring was an outstanding time! So, I would love to attend more events like that in the future too.
